23. Opperating systems allow you to access the hardware using data. Applications have GUI to allow users to use them, and input devices tell the computer what to do, like a keyboard or mouse.

Browser – a browser is an application that allows you to access webstites, using the World Wide Web

URL – Stands for Uniform Resource Locator. The URL is the the address of a website that, when you put it into the address bar at the top of your browser, it will bring you that website.

Search Engine – A search engine is something that allows you to search a word or words and the search engine will then find all the websites with those word or words in them. Basically it will show you websites that relate to the word that you searched.

Blog – Stands for Web Log. A blog is a website that a user can post things like a journal. It is displayed in reverse-chronological order, and can contain anything the author feels like.

On modern browsers, you no longer have to actually type the “http://www.” If you just type something like “wordpress.com” it will automatically add the “http://www.” before it. For some sites you don’t even have to add the “.com” on the end, because it will assume it is a .com website, and add that on the end.

On new browsers, such as firefox, chrome, or new versions of IE, you can open multiple sites but not multiple windows by using tabs. tabs are like multiple windows, but they are contained in one window, with little tabs at the top so you can switch between the sites.

The Holocaust was a terrible thing. The events that took place during this time were so terrible, that even today some people don’t believe that the Holocaust happened. Kristallnacht, Crystal Night, Night of the Broken Glass, and the November Pogrom are all names for the horrific events that occurred on the night and morning of November ninth and tenth; the planning and destruction caused the effects on people that make this a major turning point in history.

Even though it didn’t look that way, Kristallnacht was planned. Hitler, still caring about the world’s opinion of Germany, was looking for a reason to make wide-scale attacks on Jews. He sent provacateurs to give anti-Jew speeches, some went to mayors offices to ask what was being done about Jews, and some even went down the street smashing windows of shops! Finally, Hitler found his reason. A young Jew called Henry Gryszpan, whose parents had been sent away under horrible conditions, was very angry at the Nazis. On November seventh, he walked up to a German embassy with a gun. A man named Ernst Vom Rath greeted him at the door, but had the unfortunate fate of being Gryszpan’s target. The young man shot Vom Rath five times with his pistol, wounds of which he died of two days later. Hitler used this to help disguise his plans, and keep the blame away from the Nazi party, and make it look like the public was mad about the shooting. Two days after the shooting, seemingly spontaneous riots broke out, starting the destruction we have come to know as the Night of the Broken glass. (Judicial-inc.biz; aish.com)

The damage that was caused during the night was extensive. The Nazis had estimated that 267 synagogues were burned, 76 of which had been completely destroyed, but in reality the numbers were much, much higher. 1,350 synagogues were burnt and 7,000 businesses that included 815 shops and 29 warehouses had been demolished. It took workers 6 months to replace the five million marks (1.25 million dollars) worth of glass broken by the mobs. Along with those numbers, 30 thousand Jews were imprisoned, and then sent to the concentration camps of Suchenhausen, Buchenwald, and Duchau. Later, in 1939 they were allowed to leave Germany. Contradictory to what you might think, Jews were not too phased by the attacks, although they were fined 1 billion marks to pay for the damage done by the rioters. Even during the night, they hadn’t just stood by while the destruction was happening. In fact, there are quite a few reported cases of entire street mobs being beaten up and chased off. There are reports of Jew and German neighbors fighting side by side to stop the riots. Even some of the police fought on the Jews’ side! And in the morning, some people didn’t know that anything had gone on in the night. One of these cases was when all of the students and teachers at Berlin’s largest school arrived at the school, not knowing anything about the events that had taken place! (Judicial-inc.biz)

Even though it didn’t have that many effects directly, Kristallnacht was the start of widespread and open violence against Jews. They were stuffed into ghettos, arrested, and finally sent of to concentration camps where they were worked to death or gassed. Charles Babbage -Also the inventor of the Cow Catcher, he created the concept of the first mechanical computer that would store and print punched cards. He is considered the father of computers.

Herman Hollerith – Hollerith created a machine that was used in the census, because is was fed information cards with punched holes, and used electrified pins to read them. He formed the basis for IBM.

Colossus – During WWII, Colossus was created to break the enigma code used by the Germans. It was able to do so, and was regarded as the “Ultra-Secret” of the Allies.

Maucheley & Eckert – Created Eniac, a computer larger than Colossus that, could be re-configured to preform different tasks. Even though it oculd only hold 20 10-digit numbers, it was the first general-purpose computer.

John Von Newman – Wrote a paper about the computer and all it’s parts. Included were where the parts would go and fit together in an way such that internal computing would be possible. It resembled today’s computers and helped push computers further still.

IBM – In the early 1990′s IBM dominated the mainframe market. They also created the PC, which as it’s name suggests, was one of the early Personal Computers.

Kilby & Noyce – Proposed the idea of having a network of components on a single chip of silicon, called an integrated circuit. An integrated circuit was a revolutionary idea.

Ted Hoff – Created a working micro processor in 1970, which as it name suggests, was extremely small and helped reduce the size of computers even more.

Dough Engelbart – He broadcasted a demonstration of word-processing and hypertext using a keyboard, and a digital pointer, which he called a mouse. Helped rouse awareness in people.

Xerox – The Xerox Alto was one of the earliest computers to use a graphical interface, a mouse, printer, keyboard, and integrated network. Basically started everyone using a gui interface.

Steve Wozniak & Steve Jobs – In the 1970′s they created the Apple 1, and in ’77 the apple 2. The apple 2 came with a monitor and was able to get extra things by downloading them from a floppy disc, whose drive was optional. Afterwords, they created the first Macintosh, in 1984. They used gui interfaces, and pushed forward the personal computer.

Bill Gates – Is the founder of Microsoft. He used a gui interface in Microsoft’s first Operating System, MSDOS. Signed a contract with IBM, and caused most computers to be compatable with DOS. He Became the richest amn in the world.

Some solutions for this problem have been offered such as wind and solar power. Others have been created too like hydrogen power and water power, but none of those work as well fossil fuels. This is why we are using them all up. The thing is that we all want to solve this problem, but fossil fuels WILL eventually run out, so we have to find an alternate source of power. But this has proven itself to be very hard.

Our solution is this: We make wind turbines and put them under water in strong ocean currents. This will generate a lot more energy than regular wind turbines because ocean currents never stop, so the turbines will never stop. This solution might sound ridiculous but it might work, it will just be really hard to do. Each one of the turbines will cost about four million dollars. It will take about 10,000 working for 5 years to fix the problem. We would make these turbines in a factory. We would carry them piece by piece on very large boats. We would hire workers and we would have a GPS tracking system on the boats to get them to where they need to go. All of the workers would install them down on the ocean floor. To report to the people who give us money by sending a representative to their office and have a meeting with them. We would show them how much energy the turbines made, and how much money that amount of energy would be worth. All the turbines together would cost $40,000,000,000.
